I’m rolling up a 3.5e ranger as we speak. (No, not really)

I do need a game, though. Supposedly there’s one in the pipeline, but it could be months away. Maybe I should PbP.

I used to DM back in the day. I had my last two campaigns kinda dissolve and I was made sad.

I have a Pathfinder game I have more or less parked, a Shadowrun game that petered out, and a semi-live Dragon Age game which I haven’t run in like three weeks. There’s a 3.5 adventure I am running many weeks between installments at a friend’s house, but as far as anything I’m actually in - nada. My last game I played an elf barbarian/rogue/duskblade/fighter, mostly to mess with the DM, but also to make a jack of all trades character that wasn’t a bard and could maul people. If that game had gone into high enough levels I’d have gone rage mage - not that that class makes any sense, but for comedy value.

My last character was a half demon ranger pirate captain because I’m the DM that’s why.

I have been known to make DMPCs from the Far Side of the Realm of WTF a time or two myself. And/or questgiver NPCs, like that awakened thousand-year old colossal badger or the ancient gold dragon tissue-grafting mad scientist in one game... The above elf was built that way to demonstrate to a DM with“PH1 and 2 and Complete Adventurer only” restrictions that there was still plenty of room to break the game. Oh yes.

Lol I’d love to play one of your campaigns.

My favorite DMPC was a gnomish wizard that was working on perfecting golem construction. He had a wooden golem and a fish for a familiar. I treated the golem as a fighter and just split the exp they got.

The gold dragon, rather than “rescuing” the party from a plot-required more or less TPK as such, used the opportunity to 6 Million Dollar Man the party with all sorts of foreign tissue. I did have a four-armed insectile kobold DMPC in that party, but I learned two lessons: first, no DMPCs with a morally ambiguous party unless they’re psycho enough to earn respect. Second, DMPCs will not get any credit for being just slightly helpful, only contempt. You’d think being a kobold or being small would earn the contempt, but mostly that just made him look like a dinner to the troll.

The best magic item I created for that game was the one that granted an effect of silverbeard from the spell compendium (+1 armor from a metal beard, bonus to dealings with dwarves). The neogi slaver PC had that. And a top hat and monocle.

Mostly my dmpcs were healers of some degree because no one wants to play a healer.

Pathfinder has a great DMPC class for that: Oracle. Spontaneous casting, heals, and divination/other abilities that allow you to do Voice of DM plot guidance.
